Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72 years old at Long Beach in California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theater in the daylight. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was raised by an aunt who was socially aware and showed her how to utilize the arts as a way to express herself. DuVernay was a resident of Compton throughout her childhood, but she spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed the documentary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of broadcast journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the waste of one of members of juries. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work she was handed and deciding to go after a career in publicity. DuVernay got a job right out college, as a publicist in the young age of a studio. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Neben PR, her agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotions, like The Urban Beauty Collective.
